“Thanks Chris you have made a difference to my life”
“I have been a patient at Castle Park Dental Care for a number of years, and recently was really interested to hear that Chris was introducing a treatment for snoring using a laser. I have always been a loud snorer and have always wondered if there was anything that I could do about it. As well as my partner letting me know that my snoring had kept her awake, I found I was even waking myself up! I had a chat with Chris about the treatment and what would be involved. After filling out a short questionnaire I decided to go ahead.
During my first appointment, Chris took time to explain clearly, and in terminology that I could understand, what was going to happen, how long it would take and the number of appointments I may need. He also told me about the sensations that I could expect during the procedures. He was very thorough and if treatment should become too uncomfortable at any time, told me to let him know by raising my hand. I have now had three sessions of treatment and although I found the first session a little uncomfortable (I had to raise my hand a couple of times) since then I have had two more appointments and found these to be much more routine and much less uncomfortable.
I was told it would feel like I had drunk a cup of tea that was too hot, and I think this was exactly how it felt I was asked to monitor my snoring using a mobile phone app Snorelab. This I have done and regularly let Chris know how I am getting on. I must say that I am extremely impressed by the results both indicated by the app and how I feel personally. In the past I have woken up at times with a sore throat as a result of my heavy snoring as well as waking myself up during the night.
My partner too also gets a much better night’s sleep – sometimes I woke up and saw she had slept with her head buried into a pillow to muffle the sound. Although I do have two more sessions booked, I am extremely pleased with the outcome so far and would wholeheartedly recommend this treatment to anyone else who feels that snoring is ruining their own and their partner’s sleep. I could not endorse more the professionalism, care and competency in which Chris looks after his patients. I know that he is continually researching new techniques and equipment to benefit his patients, and this is really apparent when visiting Castle Park Dental Care.
Thanks Chris you have made a difference to my life and I would definitely recommend to anyone.”

Let me ask.. Do You Wish You Could Get A Good Nights Sleep For Once?
Snoring is really quite common. It can be mild or severe. In very severe cases it becomes sleep apnoea when you actually stop breathing for several seconds at a time before a big gasp and this happens several times an hour. This can put a big strain on your heart.
One of the big drawbacks of snoring is lack of sleep. This can be for the snorer, but not always. Sometimes the snorer is blissfully unaware and sleeps well.
The vibration or noise can interrupt sleep, sometimes you are not aware of it and it is more of an arousal from sleep rather than waking up but it still interrupts the normal cycle of sleep stages and still leaves you really tired in the morning.
Obviously if the snoring is loud enough then it interrupts the sleep of a sleep partner and this is when the bed in the spare room comes in!
The cause is airway collapse and vibration. The main cause is the vibration of the tongue collapsed back against the soft palate.
Solution Number 1 – Sleepwell Device
The aim is to stop the collapse. One way is to posture the lower jaw forwards which in turn brings the tongue forwards and opens up the airway using a mandibular advancement device. The one we use now is the Sleepwell device.
Sleepwell is fully patient adjustable – a simple adjustment can modify the degree of mandibular advancement, negating the need for further visits.
Sleepwell is also uniquely designed with internal splint fixing, allowing the lips to be closed around the device, preventing dry lips and excess salivation associated with other splints.
High levels of patient comfort meant that during clinical trials over 98% of patients found the device acceptable.
Solution Number 2 – Using A Gentle Laser
Another way is Non-surgical laser therapy. Dentist, Ilay and Chris are trained in this using the Nightlase™ laser. The great thing with this is no numbing, no down time, no surgery and it starts to work from the first session and the airway is improved 24hrs a day and not just when a device is worn. It’s all clever stuff.
With the Dual wavelength Nightlase™ treatment the low laser energy creates a gentle heating of the tissue of the soft palate. There is no need for local anaesthetic or a recovery period. The gentle heating is about 50-65 degrees. This equates to a cup of tea hot, so can feel a bit scratchy. The heat causes tissue changes with shrinkage from day one usually.
You need a full assessment first as usual. One assessment is called a Mallampati score. The idea is to get you to a low Mallampati score to open up the airway. It is usually 3-5 treatments about 30 minutes each 21 days apart.
